What is the dosage for Cortancyl, and how should it be taken?
The initial dosage of Cortancyl varies depending on the condition being treated and the age of the patient.
- It's recommended that you take this medication with food.
- The starting dose may be from 5 mg to 60 mg per day, and often is adjusted based on the response of the disease or condition being treated.
- Corticosteroids typically do not produce immediate effects and must be used for several days before maximal effects are seen. It may take much longer before conditions respond to treatment.
- When Cortancyl is discontinued after a period of prolonged therapy, the dose of Cortancyl must be tapered (lowered gradually) to allow the adrenal glands time to recover.

I was on Cortancyl for 5 1/2 years (Cortancyl, then Medrol). It has done tremendous damage - it threw me into diabetes, I now have 2 leaky heart valves, it weakened muscles and tendons (I ha e a torn tendon), it caused osteoporosis, Medrol caused a stomach ulcer, and much more! I am now totally disabled from use of Cortancyl and Medrol.
Dosage for endocrine disorders

Adult dosage (ages 18–64 years)
- Typical starting dosage: This may vary from 5 mg to 60 mg per day, depending on the condition being treated.
- For the immediate-release tablets only: To reduce side effects, twice the usual dose of this drug may be taken every other morning. This is called alternate day therapy. Do not use alternate day therapy unless prescribed by your doctor.
Child dosage (ages 0–17 years)
Dosage for children is usually based on weight. Your doctor will determine the best dosage for your child.
Senior dosage (ages 65 years and older)
Older adults may process drugs more slowly. A normal adult dose may cause levels of the drug to be higher than normal. If you’re a senior, you may need a lower dose or a different dosing schedule.
What is Cortancyl? How does it work?
Cortancyl is a drug that belongs to the corticosteroid drug class, and is an anti-inflammatory and immune system suppressant. It's used to treat a variety of diseases and conditions, for example: inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), lupus, asthma, cancers, and several types of arthritis.
Common side effects are weight gain, headache, fluid retention, and muscle weakness. Other effects and adverse events include glaucoma, cataracts, obesity, facial hair growth, moon face, and growth retardation in children. This medicine also causes psychiatric problems, for example: depression, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and psychotic behavior. Serious side effects include reactions to diabetes drugs, infections, and necrosis of the hips and joints.
Corticosteroids like Cortancyl, have many drug interactions; examples include: estrogens, phenytoin (Dilantin), diuretics, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), alcohol, and diabetes drugs. Cortancyl is available as tablets of 1, 2.5, 10, 20, and 50 mg; extended release tablets of 1, 2, and 5mg; and oral solution of 5mg/5ml. It's use during the first trimester of pregnancy may cause cleft palate. This medicine is secreted in breast milk and can cause side effects in infants who are nursing. You should not stop taking Cortancyl abruptly because it can cause withdrawal symptoms and adrenal failure. Allergic reaction warning
Cortancyl oral tablet can cause a serious allergic reaction in some people. This reaction can cause a skin rash, which can include:
- trouble breathing
- swelling of your face, tongue, or throat
- red, itchy rash that affects one or more patches of skin
If you develop these symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Don’t take this drug again if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to it. Taking it again could be fatal (cause death).

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Cortancyl: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath;
severe depression, feelings of extreme happiness or sadness, changes in personality or behavior, seizure (convulsions);
bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood;
pancreatitis (severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate);
low potassium (confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling); or
dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).
Other common Cortancyl side effects may include:
sleep problems (insomnia), mood changes;
increased appetite, gradual weight gain;
acne, increased sweating, dry skin, thinning skin, bruising or discoloration;
slow wound healing;
headache, dizziness, spinning sensation;
nausea, stomach pain, bloating; or
changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist).
