Which drugs or supplements interact with Lapol?

Lapol is less likely than omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid) to interact with other drugs.

The absorption of certain drugs may be affected by stomach acidity, and, as a result, Lapol and other PPIs that reduce stomach acid also reduce the absorption and concentration in blood of ketoconazole (Nizoral) and increase the absorption and concentration in blood of digoxin (Lanoxin). This may lead to reduced effectiveness of ketoconazole or increased digoxin toxicity, respectively.

Lapol may increase blood levels of methotrexate (Trexall) and tacrolimus (Prograf).

Proton pump inhibitors may also increase the action of warfarin (Coumadin), increasing the risk of bleeding.

How it works

Lapol belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

Lapol works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It does this by blocking the proton pump in the cells of your stomach. The proton pump works in the final step of acid production. When the proton pump is blocked, your stomach makes less acid. This helps to decrease your symptoms.

Lapol oral capsule doesn’t cause drowsiness, but it can cause other side effects.

Liquid Lapol

Liquid Lapol can be prescribed and made to order for children and people who cannot swallow capsules or tablets. It will come with a syringe or spoon to help you take the right amount. If you don't have a syringe or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not give the right amount.

Tablets and capsules

Swallow tablets and capsules whole with a glass of water or juice. If you have problems swallowing capsules, you can open Lapol capsules and mix the granules inside with a little water or fruit juice, or sprinkle them onto soft food, such as yogurt or apple puree, to help you swallow them.

Lapol also comes as a dispersible tablet that melts in your mouth. Each tablet or capsule contains 15mg or 30mg of Lapol.

  • COMMON BRAND(S): Prevacid

    GENERIC NAME(S): Lapol

Lapol is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Lapol belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter Lapol products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away.

For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Taking the wrong product could harm you.

    Q: Can Prevacid cause hyperkalemia?

A: Prevacid (Lapol) belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Common side effects of Prevacid include headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. A search of the prescribing information for Prevacid shows that increased blood levels of potassium or hyperkalemia can occur with Prevacid. Hyperkalemia is a condition caused by an abnormally high concentration of potassium in the blood. Potassium is a key element in contraction of muscles (including the heart) and for the functioning of many complicated proteins (enzymes). Potassium is found primarily in the skeletal muscle and bone, and participates with sodium to contribute to the normal flow between the body fluids and the cells of the body (homeostasis). The concentration of potassium in the body is regulated by the kidneys, and balance is maintained through excretion in urine. Sometimes hyperkalemia has no symptoms. Other times you may experience irregular heartbeat, fatigue, weakness, tingling, numbness, or other unusual sensations, paralysis, difficulty breathing, and nausea and vomiting. Sarah Lewis, PharmD

What if I take too much?

It is very unlikely that taking 1 or 2 extra doses by accident will cause any problems. However, you should check with your doctor if you have taken too much and have any of these symptoms:

    • flushed skin
    • feeling sweaty
    • a fast heartbeat
    • feeling sleepy
    • blurred vision
    • feeling confused or agitated

Most people who take Lapol do not have any side effects. If you do get a side effect, it is usually mild and will go away when you stop taking Lapol.
