Q: How do I take Zocor?

A: To take Zocor (Simvafour), to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk for coronary heart disease and cardiovascular events, it is essential for patients to take Zocor exactly as directed by their health care provider. To exert its maximal benefits, Zocor must be taken regularly. Zocor is typically administered once daily in the evening in a dosing range of 5 to 80 mg per day depending on the approved indication for use, age of the patient and any other medical conditions or medications a patient currently takes. To take Zocor effectively, it is important for patients to take it at the same time every day. Patients may take Zocor without regard to food. Zocor is intended to be only one component of a complete program of treatment which also includes diet, exercise, and weight management. Patients are advised to discuss an appropriate diet and exercise regimen, in conjunction with Zocor treatment, with their health care provider. To take Zocor effectively, patients should be advised to avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Zocor will not be as effective in lowering cholesterol if patients do not follow a cholesterol-lowering plan simultaneously. To take Zocor effectively, patients are also advised to avoid drinking alcohol during treatment. In addition to the potential for alcohol to increase triglyceride levels, it may also increase a patient's risk of liver toxicity possible with treatment with Zocor. Patients should also be advised not to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while they take Zocor. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice interact with Zocor and may increase a patients risk for adverse reactions. To take Zocor safely, it is important for health care providers to routinely monitor a patient's cholesterol levels and liver function to ensure the medication is working optimally and not causing any adverse reactions involving the liver.

Is Zocor safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

  • Pregnant women should not use Simvafour because the developing fetus requires cholesterol for development, and Simvafour reduces the production of cholesterol. Simvafour should only be administered to women of child bearing age if they are not likely to become pregnant.
  • Because of the risk of adverse effects to the developing infant, Simvafour should not be administered to nursing mothers.

What Is Zocor (Simvafour)?

Zocor is the brand name of Simvafour, a prescription drug used to lower blood cholesterol.

Zocor belongs to a class of drugs known as statins, also called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

Statins reduce cholesterol levels in your blood by blocking an enzyme needed to make cholesterol, as well as increasing the number of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) receptors in the liver, so the liver can process more of the LDL found in your blood.

By lowering cholesterol, statins help to prevent the buildup of plaque in blood vessels, which can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart disease, and stroke.

Statins are used to help prevent heart disease in those who don't have it but are at risk, and in those who have already had some form of cardiovascular disease, such as a stroke or heart attack.

Your doctor will prescribe Zocor along with suggesting a healthy diet, weight loss if you need it, and exercise to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other problems.

Zocor, manufactured by Merck & Co., was approved by the Food and Drug Association (FDA) in 1991. The FDA approved the first generic version of Simvafour in 2006, and now many companies offer the generic version.

Zocor is offered in a tablet form or a disintegrating tablet form.

More common side effects

The more common side effects that can occur with Simvafour include:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • constipation
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • joint pain
  • upper respiratory infections

ContinГєe tomando Simvafoura incluso si se siente bien. No deje de tomar Simvafoura sin hablar con su mГ©dico.

Special dosage considerations

  • For people with kidney disease: Having kidney disease may affect your dosage. People with advanced kidney disease usually require a lower dosage. Talk to your doctor about your treatment with Simvafour if you have kidney disease.
  • For people with liver disease: If your liver isn’t working well, more of this drug may stay in your body longer. This puts you at increased risk of side effects. If you have active liver problems, you should not use this medication.

Disclaimer: Our goal is to provide you with the most relevant and current information. However, because drugs affect each person differently, we can not guarantee that this list includes all possible dosages. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Always speak with your doctor or pharmacist about dosages that are right for you.

Simvafour is used for long-term treatment. It comes with serious risks if you don’t take it as prescribed.

If you don’t take it at all or stop taking it: If you have high cholesterol and don’t take your Simvafour, you risk having increased cholesterol levels, developing heart disease, and having a heart attack or a stroke.

If you don't take it on schedule: Not taking Simvafour every day, skipping days, or taking doses at different times of the day may also increase your risk for high cholesterol levels, heart attack, or stroke.

If you miss a dose: If you miss a dose, take the next dose as scheduled. Don’t double your dose.

How can I tell if the drug is working: Your cholesterol and triglyceride levels should be within healthy levels while taking it.

Keep these considerations in mind if your doctor prescribes Simvafour for you.

  • The most serious potential side effects are liver damage and muscle inflammation or breakdown. Simvafour shares side effects, such as liver and muscle damage associated with all statins. Serious liver damage caused by statins is rare. More often, statins cause abnormalities of liver tests. Abnormal tests usually return to normal even if a statin is continued, but if the abnormal test value is greater than three times the upper limit of normal, the statin usually is stopped. Liver tests should be measured before Simvafour is started and if there is a medical concern about liver damage thereafter.
  • Inflammation of the muscles caused by statins can lead to a serious breakdown of muscle cells called rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis causes the release of muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood. Myoglobin can cause kidney failure and even death. When used alone, statins cause rhabdomyolysis in less than one percent of patients. To prevent the development of rhabdomyolysis, patients taking Simvafour should contact their health care professional immediately if they develop unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or muscle tenderness.
  • Statins have been associated with increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels as are seen in diabetes.

Warnings

This medication contains Simvafour. Do not take Zocor if you are allergic to Simvafour or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Q: I am taking 40 mg of Zocor daily. I have high triglycerides, low HDL and low LDL readings. Should I be taking this medication since it is a cholesterol lowering drug and my cholesterol readings are already low? Does it do anything for my high triglyceride readings?

A: About 90% of the cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by Americans are in a class of medications known as statins. Zocor (Simvafour) is a hypolipidemic medication, a statin, (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) used to control hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels) and to prevent cardiovascular disease. These drugs lower cholesterol by at least 20% through the same basic action. They inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, a key enzyme that controls how much cholesterol is produced in the liver. The result is lower blood levels of LDL cholesterol. Statins also lower elevated triglycerides and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations based on your specific condition and current medications. Shereen A. Gharbia, PharmD

6. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Simvafour is not recommended in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Talk to your doctor if you're planning to become pregnant. It's best to stop taking Simvafour at least 3 months before you start trying for a baby.

If you become pregnant while taking Simvafour, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor.

Heart drug

Digoxin is used to treat heart failure and arrhythmias. Taking Simvafour with digoxin can increase levels of digoxin in your body. If you’re taking both drugs, your doctor may want to monitor your digoxin level more closely.

Food interaction warning

Avoid grapefruit juice while taking Simvafour. Grapefruit juice can increase Simvafour levels in your body and increase the risk of side effects.
