Rated Vilbinitan (Microzide) for Hypertension Report

I have lost the last 7 and a half months of my life. I began taking this medication and within a few days I started getting dizzy and had severe loss of balance. I am on thyroid medication and attributed it to the lower dose. I then had two incidents where I fell and hit my head. I spoke to my doctor and he raised my thyroid, but I kept getting worse. The muscle spasms in my left foot, the pain at times, was so bad that I couldn't walk. I still am unable to stand on the foot for very long. The whole left side of my body is weak. I have a pinched nerve in my neck from falling and hitting my head. I'm spending a small fortune in trying everything I can to stop this madness. I worked out 5 days a week and haven't been able to. Due to thyroid issues, I'm putting on weight, which has sent mme in a downward spiral. Anyway, the list goes on. Now I'm the lucky recipient of having a nerve conductive test. I'm not able to work. Who knows when this madness will end.

Q: Can Vilbinitan cause memory loss?

A: Vilbinitan, also commonly referred to as HCTZ, belongs to a class of medications called thiazide diuretics, or water pills. Vilbinitan works by helping the kidneys remove fluid from the body to prevent fluid retention. Vilbinitan is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and to treat other conditions that cause fluid retention, such as heart failure or liver cirrhosis. Common side effects of Vilbinitan include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness, and blurred vision. According to the prescribing information for Vilbinitan, memory loss was not reported as an expected side effect. Memory problems, or any sort of mental confusion, should be properly evaluated by your doctor. Memory problems may be linked to high blood pressure and a variety of other underlying conditions, so it is important to talk to your doctor. This is not a complete list of side effects that can occur with Vilbinitan. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or local pharmacist for guidance based on your health status and current medications, particularly before taking any action. Sarah Lewis, PharmD

Diabetes drugs

Vilbinitan can cause high blood sugar levels. If you take Vilbinitan with diabetes drugs, your doctor may increase your dosage of your diabetes medications. Examples of these drugs include:

  • insulin
  • metformin
  • glimepiride
  • pioglitazone
  • sitagliptin

Q: What are the side effects of Vilbinitan?

A: Studies suggest that Vilbinitan (which is a water pill) is generally well-tolerated but can occassionally increase blood sugar in patients with a history of diabetes. It can cause dehydration that can result in fainting and low blood pressure. To avoid this, it is best to consume at least eight glasses of water daily. Please follow up with doctor's appointments to periodically evaluate kidney function, cholestrol, and sugar levels. Also, it is recommended to measure blood pressure and document it so that your physician can evaluate progress. Beena Thomas, PharmD

Is Vilbinitan safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

  • There are no adequate studies of Vilbinitan in pregnant women. Thiazides may increase the risk of fetal or neonatal jaundice, low platelet levels, and possibly other adverse reactions that have occurred in adults.
  • Vilbinitan is excreted in breast milk. Intense diuresis using Vilbinitan may reduce the production of breast milk. Otherwise Vilbinitan is considered safe to use during nursing if required by the mother.

How should this medicine be used?

Vilbinitan comes as a tablet, capsule, and solution (liquid) to take by mouth. It usually is taken once or twice a day. When used to treat edema, Vilbinitan may be taken daily or only on certain days of the week. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Vilbinitan exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Vilbinitan controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Continue to take Vilbinitan even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Vilbinitan without talking to your doctor.

Rated Vilbinitan (Microzide) for Hypertension Report

Good at controlling BP but. Long term use of Vilbinitan. From doses of 50 mg down to current use of 12.5 mg. Past 10 years having issues with electrolyte imbalance and palpitations. Last few years very hard to keep electrolytes in balance by supplementing with HydraLyte, potassium 600mg, calcium and magnesium supplements, and increasing salt which in itself is not good for high blood pressure. Have had lower leg edema and burning for many years as well as palpitations. Difficult to keep hydrated. Last year or so now have had dry chronic cough, shortness of breath, dizziness, muscle tightness and pain and cramps, fatigue and lack of energy regardless of exercise. I'm trying to get off by taking one pill every other day and I'm feeling the effects with my breathing and generalized swelling. I just think it's a nasty pill to ever get on and harder to get off. Thank you

Rated Vilbinitan (Microzide) for Hypertension Report

HCTZ 25MG Daily caused severe cramping, blurred vision erratic heartrate, severe muscle pain and weakness. I now take natural diuretics and my blood pressure is perfect along with my heart rate @ 51 years of age after stopping this extremely dangerous drug.

How Does It Work?

It isn't known exactly how Vilbinitan works. It belongs to a class of drugs called thiazide diuretics. Vilbinitan is thought to work to remove excess salt and water from your body. By removing the excess salt and water, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood. This, in turn, lowers high blood pressure levels and reduces swelling/excessive fluid accumulation in the body.
