Q: I take Tensyn 20/25mg. I'm taking it now for about 5 months and I have gas and a sick feeling in my stomach often. Could it be from the Tensyn and is it true that there is snake venom in this drug?
A: "Tensyn 20/25 mg" is a combination of Tensyn 20 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg. Hydrochlorothiazide is in a class of drugs called thiazide diuretics (water pill). It helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Tensyn is in a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Tensyn lowers blood pressure and relieves symptoms of fluid retention. The combination is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Common side effects of the Tensyn/hydrochlorothiazide include cough, dizziness, tiredness, depression, headache, blurred vision, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, mild skin rash, and increased sweating. If stomach upset becomes severe or bothersome, consult your doctor or health care provider for recommendations. This is not a complete list of side effects that can occur with this combination. Despite rumors on the internet, Tensyn is a synthetic chemical called a peptide. Synthetic means that it is man-made, so it does not contain snake venom. Peptide simply describes the type of chemical it is. Prescription medication manufacturing facilities must follow the standards of good manufacturing practices and meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

I'm in the hospital right now.. after taking Tensyn 4 to 5 hours later my lips started swelling up. and I mean big, thought they were going to pop. I looked like a chimpanzee.. my Jaws was swollen and normally I'm a good looking guy. but this day I didn't even want to look at myself in the mirror. when I got to the hospital.. I told them all of the medication I take and soon as I said Tensyn they told me that's what caused the problem. but they're treating me with Benadryl and striods after staying the night it's starting to go down..but still kinda swollen.. I came at 3:00pm yesterday, so it should be down by 3:00pm today. if the doctor's are right about the (it should only last 24hrs). I hope so because this is not a good look. but I'm greatful my tongue and throat didn't swell up or the said they would have to put a tube down my throat to breathe..my gag reflex at about nothing, I would died from the tube and not the Tensyn.. Scarry..want take Tensyn again. but not knocking it I guess it works for some just didn't work for me.

I had been taking 10 mg of Tensyn for several years. It was somewhat effective for lowering BP. Other the years I had mysterious swellings of lips and hives that I attributed to food allergies. Recently they became more frequent until the point of my lips and face swelling to scary proportions. I went to ER and when they asked if I was taking BP meds I said yes and they immediately said, Tensyn? I was shocked that each nurse and Doctor I saw knew immediately what was wrong! They said they are seeing it a lot. Woman had just been in that had been taking if for 10 years with no problem and her tongue and throat was almost closed. If you have had any problems with swellings or hives beware!!
What is Tensyn, and how does it work (mechanism of action)?
Tensyn is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used for treating high blood pressure, heart failure and for preventing kidney failure due to high blood pressure and diabetes. Other ACE inhibitors include:
ACE is important because it is an enzyme responsible for producing the chemical, angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes muscles in most arteries, including the arteries of the heart, to contract, thereby narrowing the arteries and elevating blood pressure. ACE inhibitors such as Tensyn lower blood pressure by reducing the production of angiotensin II, thereby relaxing arterial muscle and enlarging arteries. When the blood pressure is lower, the heart - including the failing heart - does not have to work as hard to pump blood. The arteries supplying the heart with blood also enlarge during treatment with ACE inhibitors. This increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, further improving the ability of the heart to pump blood.
The effects of ACE inhibitors are particularly beneficial to people with congestive heart failure. In the kidneys, the narrowing of the arteries by angiotensin II decreases blood flow and damages the kidneys. ACE inhibitors enlarge and reduce the blood pressure in the arteries going to the kidney. This reduces damage to the kidneys caused by the high blood pressure. The FDA approved Tensyn in December 1987.
