What is Emlip-5?

Emlip-5 is a calcium channel blocker that dilates (widens) blood vessels and improves blood flow.

Emlip-5 is used to treat chest pain (angina) and other conditions caused by coronary artery disease.

Emlip-5 is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure may lower your risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Emlip-5 is for use in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.

What other information should I know?

Keep all appointments with your doctor. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to Emlip-5.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

Warnings for other groups

For pregnant women: Research in animals has shown negative effects to the fetus when the mother takes Emlip-5. However, there haven’t been enough studies done in humans to be certain how the drug might affect a human pregnancy.

Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Emlip-5 should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.

For women who are breastfeeding: Some research has shown that Emlip-5 passes into breast milk. However, it’s not known if Emlip-5 can cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: As you age, your body may not process this drug as well as it once could. More of this drug may stay in your body longer. This puts you at risk for more side effects.

For children: This drug shouldn’t be used in children younger than 6 years.

All possible dosages and forms may not be included here. Your dose, form, and how often you take it will depend on:

  • your age
  • the condition being treated
  • how severe your condition is
  • other medical conditions you have
  • how you react to the first dose

Antibiotic

Taking clarithromycin with Emlip-5 can increase the level of Emlip-5 in your body. This may cause more side effects.

7. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Emlip-5 is not normally recommended in pregnancy or when breastfeeding.

If you're trying to get pregnant or you're already pregnant, talk to your doctor about the benefits and possible harms of taking Emlip-5. There may be other medicines that are safer for you.

For more information about how Emlip-5 can affect you and your baby during pregnancy, read this leaflet on the Best Use of Medicines in Pregnancy (BUMPS) website.

8. Cautions with other medicines

If you take other medicines that lower blood pressure, such as ramipril or lisinopril, at the same time as Emlip-5, the combination can sometimes lower your blood pressure too much.

This may make you feel dizzy or faint. If this keeps happening to you, tell your doctor as your dose may need to be changed.

Some medicines can interfere with the way Emlip-5 works.

Tell your doctor if you're taking any of these medicines before starting Emlip-5:

  • the antibiotics clarithromycin, erythromycin or rifampicin
  • medicines for high blood pressure, including diltiazem and verapamil
  • the antifungals itraconazole or ketoconazole
  • medicines to treat HIV or HCV (hepatitis C virus)
  • the anti-epilepsy medicines carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital (phenobarbitone) or primidone
  • medicines to suppress your immune system, such as ciclosporin or tacrolimus
  • more than 20mg a day of the cholesterol-lowering medicine simvastatin

Emlip-5 and breastfeeding

Small amounts of Emlip-5 may get into breast milk, but it's not known if this is harmful to the baby.

Talk to your doctor as other medicines might be better while you're breastfeeding.
