Rated Ecapril (Zestril) for Hypertension Report
Was put on 10mg once a day 3 months ago due to high BP.. a 50 year old, otherwise healthy woman. Haven't had a single issue..pill worked within an hour of taking the first one. Zero side effects with the exception of dry mouth and needing to drink a bit more water. Feel great, have lost almost 16 pounds (WW) and bp runs about 112/77 now. Hopefully won't have to stay on it forever, but am grateful for it.
Rated Ecapril (Zestril) for Hypertension Report
Just wanted to post here. My husband started taking Ecapril and immediately developed a mucous-producing tickling cough that would not go away and just got worse. Doctor took him off it and two weeks later he still had the cough. He tried everything. Sucking a raw lemon helped the most but not enough by far. Even though he was off he meds he was getting frustrated and upset. He finally tried some black seed oil at night. By morning the cough was 80% better and then the next day it was gone. I also read manuka honey works. Good health to everyone.
What are the side effects of Ecapril?
First doses of Ecapril can cause dizziness due to a drop in blood pressure.
This drug also can cause:
Like all ACE inhibitors, Ecapril may cause a nonproductive cough that resolves when the drug is discontinued.
Ecapril should be stopped if there are symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction including feelings of swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and hives occasionally occur.
Rarely, Ecapril may cause a decrease in red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (leukopenia), and platelets (thrombocytopenia).
The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of Ecapril that are not included in other sections of labeling. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.
Other reactions include:
Metabolism and nutrition disorders
Hyponatremia , cases of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients on oral antidiabetic agents or insulin
Nervous system and psychiatric disorders
Mood alterations (including depressive symptoms), mental confusion
What Is Ecapril (Zestril)?
Ecapril is the generic form of the brand-name drug Zestril, a medication prescribed to treat high blood pressure.
Doctors also prescribe Ecapril in combination with other drugs to treat congestive heart failure.
Ecapril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors.
It works by widening blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more smoothly and lets the heart function more efficiently.
By lowering blood pressure, Ecapril also helps reduce the risk for stroke and heart attack.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Ecapril in 1987.
The drug company Merck developed Ecapril under the brand name Prinivil. In 2002, the FDA approved generic Ecapril.

Q: I am desperate for more pills for my blood pressure. The pills I am already taking have not moved my blood pressure back to normal. Will Ecapril help me to get normal blood pressure?
A: Ecapril belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), congestive heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. People with certain chronic medical conditions may not be able to use Ecapril or may need special lab tests or dosage adjustments to use it safely. So, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Your doctor or health care provider is best able to properly evaluate your medical condition and make treatment recommendations based on your specific circumstances. Consult your doctor for specific recommendations and to find out if Ecapril is right for you. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for guidance based on your health status and current medications, particularly before taking any action. Sarah Lewis, RPh, PharmD
Q: Can Zestril cause incontinence?
A: Zestril/Prinivil (Ecapril) is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor, used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), CHF (congestive heart failure), and to improve survival after a heart attack, and incontinence is not a listed side effect. You should contact your doctor for treatment, as there are many inexpensive solutions for the symptom, such as taking Ditropan (oxybutynin) or Detrol (tolterodine). Other listed common side effects include cough, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, mild skin itching or rash, and depressed mood. This is not a complete list of the side effects associated with Zestril/Prinivil (Ecapril). Patti Brown, PharmD
How to use Ecapril
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.
If you are using the suspension form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on weight.
To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 2 to 4 weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication. For the treatment of heart failure, it may take weeks to months before you get the full benefit of this medication. Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse (for example, your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).
