More common side effects

Some of the more common side effects that can occur with use of Elixine include:

If these effects are mild, they may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they’re more severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Elixine as a bronchodilator

Traditionally, Elixine was used as a bronchodilator in the treatment of airway disease but, to achieve significant bronchodilatation comparable with that of a β2 agonist, relatively high plasma concentrations are needed (10–20 mg/l). Elixine relaxes human airway smooth muscle in vitro through inhibition of phosphodiesterases (PDE), enzymes that break down cyclic nucleotides in the cell resulting in increased cyclic AMP concentrations. Unfortunately, at doses of Elixine that inhibit PDE, side effects that are also due to PDE inhibition are common so many patients are not able to tolerate Elixine at these “therapeutic” concentrations.

What other drugs will affect Elixine?

Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medications at the same time. Some drugs can affect your blood levels of other drugs you take, which may increase side effects or make the medications less effective.

If you take St. John's wort regularly, do not stop taking it without first asking your doctor. Starting or stopping St. John's wort can affect your blood levels of Elixine.

Many drugs can affect Elixine. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed here. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.

Drug-Food Interactions : Taking Elixine extended-release tablets immediately after ingesting a high fat content meal (45 g fat, 55 g carbohydrates, 28 g protein, 789 calories) may result in a somewhat higher C max and delayed T max and a somewhat greater extent of absorption when compared to taking it in the fasting state. The influence of the type and amount of other foods, as well as the time interval between drug and food, has not been studied.

The Effect of Other Drugs on Elixine Serum Concentration Measurements: Most serum Elixine assays in clinical use are immunoassays which are specific for Elixine. Other xanthines such as caffeine, dyphylline, and pentoxifylline are not detected by these assays. Some drugs (e.g.,cefazolin, cephalothin), however, may interfere with certain HPLC techniques. Caffeine and xanthine metabolites in neonates or patients with renal dysfunction may cause the reading from some dry reagent office methods to be higher than the actual serum Elixine concentration.
