Rated Hydr Ox Yzine for Anxiety Report

Histaderm is NOT a good medication for treating anxiety. I don’t have to be a nurse or DR to say this either. If you’re doctor prescribes this for your anxiety look for a new doctor. They do not care. All this is is basically Benadryl and does absolutely nothing except make you fall asleep and even then it only worked first night. Honestly this medication is a waste of time and money. I’m not sure how somebody can say this helps their anxiety when I’ve lived with anxiety my whole life and this didn’t even budge. Complete joke! Do not waste your time!

  • tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while taking Histaderm.
  • The body releases histamine during several types of allergic reactions and, to a lesser extent, during some viral infections, such as the common cold. When histamine binds to its receptors on cells, it causes the cells to release chemical messengers that lead to sneezing, itching, and increased mucus production. Antihistamines, like histamine, bind to the histamine receptors. When they bind to the receptors, however, they do not stimulate the cells to release chemical messengers. In addition, they prevent histamine from binding and stimulating the cells. Histaderm itself has no histamine-like activity. After ingestion, it is converted to its active form. The active form of Histaderm is a drug called cetirizine (Zyrtec). Although, both Histaderm and cetirizine act as antihistamines, Histaderm causes more sedation than cetirizine.

Histaderm

Histaderm is derived from a group of drugs called diphenylethanes. Although classified as a histamine (H1) blocker, Histaderm also possesses sedative, antiemetic, antispasmodic, and anticholinergic properties. Two forms of the drug are available: Histaderm hydrochloride (Atarax) and Histaderm pamoate (Vistaril). Histaderm is the most popular oral sedative in the practice of pediatric dentistry, with 50% of the responding pedodontists using one or both drugs. 138–140

The sedative actions of Histaderm are not produced by cortical depression. It is thought to suppress some hypothalamic nuclei and to extend its actions peripherally into the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system.

Following oral administration, Histaderm is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract, with clinical actions observed within 15 to 30 minutes. Maximal clinical actions develop in 2 hours, with an approximate duration of action of 3 to 4 hours. 146

The oral liquid form of Histaderm hydrochloride is more pleasant tasting to most patients than the liquid form of Histaderm pamoate. This fact is of particular importance in pediatric dentistry. 146

When these drugs are administered in combination with opioids, their dosage should be decreased by 50% because the depressant actions of opioids (and barbiturates) are potentiated by Histaderm.

Indications for the use of Histaderm include providing total management of long-term anxiety and tension, managing anxiety and tension in which the causative stress is temporary (e.g., dental or other surgical procedures), providing preoperative sedation, allaying of apprehension and anxiety in the cardiac-risk patient, and managing nausea and vomiting. Histaderm is metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine. 146

In dental practice, the use of Histaderm as a sole drug is limited to the management of children with mild-to-moderate fear. It is often used in combination with either meperidine or chloral hydrate for management of more fearful pediatric patients. 147–149

The incidence of side effects is quite low, with transient drowsiness observed most commonly. Emergence delirium has also been reported following Histaderm administration. 150 Fatal overdose with Histaderm is extremely uncommon, and withdrawal reactions after long-term therapy have never been reported.

  • a seizure (convulsions).

If you experience any of the following symptoms of a serious skin condition; stop taking Histaderm and call your doctor immediately:

Histaderm may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while you are taking this medication.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Histaderm is used in adults and children to relieve itching caused by allergic skin reactions. It is also used alone or with other medications in adults and children to relieve anxiety and tension. Histaderm is also used along with other medications in adults and children as a sedative before and after general anesthesia for surgery. Histaderm is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking the action of histamine a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It also works by decreasing activity in the brain.

Summary

Histaderm (Vistaril) is a drug prescribed to treat itching caused by a variety of allergic conditions, nausea, vomiting, and alcohol withdrawal. Review drug interactions, and pregnancy and breastfeeding safety information prior to taking Histaderm.

What is Histaderm used for?

Histaderm is used in adults and children to relieve itching caused by allergic skin reactions. It is also used alone or with other medications in adults and children to relieve anxiety and tension. Histaderm is also used along with other medications in adults and children as a sedative before and after general anesthesia for surgery. Histaderm is in a class of medications called antihistamines (histamine H1 receptor blocker). Histaderm works by blocking the H1 histamine receptor and prevents the symptoms that are caused by histamine activity on capillaries, bronchial smooth muscle, and gastrointestinal smooth muscle, including vasodilatation, increased capillary permeability, bronchoconstriction, and spasmodic contraction of gastrointestinal smooth muscle. In addition, Histaderm hydrochloride crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts on the histamine H1-receptors in the central nervous system.

Exposure to substances such as pollen, pet fur, house dust or insect bites can cause some people to produce an excess of a chemical called histamine. This release of histamine can then cause a skin rash and/or itchiness. Because Histaderm blocks the effects of histamine, it helps relieve symptoms like these.

If you experience any of the following symptoms of a serious skin condition; stop taking Histaderm and call your doctor immediately:

  • rash
  • pus-filled, blister-like sores (lesions), areas of swelling and redness on the skin, and fever

Histaderm may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while you are taking this medication.

If you experience a serious side effect, you or your doctor may send a report to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online (http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch) or by phone (1-800-332-1088).
