1. WHAT YOUR MEDICINE IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
Zimoxyl is one of a group of antibiotic medicines called penicillins. Zimoxyl works by interfering with the bacteria that cause the infection.
Zimoxyl can treat a wide range of infections including those of the following:
- chest (bronchitis or pneumonia)
- tonsils (tonsillitis)
- ears (otitis media)
- sinuses (sinusitis)
- heart (endocarditis)
- gums (abscesses)
- blood (septicaemia)
- abdomen (intra-abdominal sepsis and peritonitis)
- the bladder or the urethra (the tube which carries urine from the bladder)
- the female reproductive system including infections caused by difficulties during childbirth (puerperal sepsis and septic abortion)
Zimoxyl can also be used to treat:
- gonorrhoea (a sexually transmitted infection)
- infections associated with pregnancy
- typhoid and paratyphoid (fevers caused by a group of bacteria called Salmonella)
Zimoxyl may also be used in combination with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers.
Unusually weak or tired
Fatigue is a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy.
Fatigue is different from drowsiness. In general, drowsiness is feeling the need to sleep, while fatigue is a lack of energy and motivation. Drowsiness and apathy (a feeling of indifference or not caring about what happens) can be symptoms that go along with fatigue.
If your fatigue falls under the category of “excessive tiredness,” this is a serious side effect. It’s uncommon, but you should still consult your doctor immediately. This can happen when the nervous system is affected.
If you’re just tired, take some time to rest, take things easy, and get enough sleep. Try to reduce stress.
When taking Zimoxyl to combat an infection, it’s normal to feel tired. However, if you’re excessively tired to the point of feeling weak, faint, or struggling to stay awake, get medical attention.

Dosing In Neonates And Infants Aged ≤ 12 Weeks ( ≤ 3 Months)
Treatment should be continued for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours beyond the time that the patient becomes asymptomatic or evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained. It is recommended that there be at least 10 days' treatment for any infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes to prevent the occurrence of acute rheumatic fever. Due to incompletely developed renal function affecting elimination of Zimoxyl in this age group, the recommended upper dose of AMOXIL is 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours. There are currently no dosing recommendations for pediatric patients with impaired renal function.

Q: Is Zimoxyl really safe to take while pregnant?
A: Zimoxyl is a prescription antibiotic. It is usually considered to be safe for use during pregnancy. The FDA uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category B is given to medicines that have not been adequately studied in pregnant humans but do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Zimoxyl is classified as a Category B medication. A pregnancy Category B medicine is given to a pregnant woman only if a health care provider believes that the benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child. For instance, if the infection, left untreated, will do more harm than good for both you and the baby, this is the safest antibiotic to choose. Lori Poulin, PharmD

Q: I was prescribed Zimoxyl 500 mg every eight hours. How much passes to my breast milk, and how much will this affect my baby?
A: Zimoxyl is an antibiotic in the penicillin group of drugs. It fights bacteria in your body. Zimoxyl is used to treat many types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection. Penicillins have been shown to be excreted in human milk. Zimoxyl use by nursing mothers may lead to sensitization of infants. Caution should be exercised when Zimoxyl is administered to a nursing woman. When your doctor prescribes a new medication, be sure to discuss all your prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including dietary supplements, vitamins, botanicals, minerals, and herbals, as well as the foods you eat. Always keep a current list of the drugs and supplements you take and review it with your health care providers and your pharmacist. If possible, use one pharmacy for all your prescription medications and over-the-counter products. This allows your pharmacist to keep a complete record of all your prescription drugs and to advise you about drug interactions and side effects. For more specific information, consult with your doctor or pharmacist for guidance based on your health status and current medications, particularly before taking any action.
