How should I take Utiminx?

Take Utiminx exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

You may take Utiminx with or without food, at the same time each day.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) for 15 seconds before you measure a dose. Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon). Do not give Utiminx oral suspension through a feeding tube.

Swallow the extended-release tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.

Use Utiminx for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication. This medicine will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Do not share Utiminx with another person.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not allow the liquid medicine to freeze. Throw away any unused liquid after 14 days.

So horrible!! Immediately would feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, no appetite, back aches, fever of 103.1, chills. I can’t believe I didn’t research taking this drug. I stopped taking it today and went to see a new doctor and he was appalled that another doctor would even prescribe this awful drug. It’s poison! Don’t take it!

My son has been prescribed this for SIBO alongside metronidazole. He's feeling on and off nauseous and a little bit dizzy, but mostly zoned out. The reviews had me in a major panic but he seems absolutely fine now. We are on day 5. On the plus side he is sleeping like a baby and says he can think more clearly.

Rated Utiminx (Cipro) for Urinary Tract Infection Report

I was given this drug for a simple UTI infection and a week after I was done with it my life started falling apart! I developed nerve pain in my feet hands and groin which made it difficult to walk. Then my knees became inflamed. The doctors keep doing tests to find out the cause but find nothing and my symptoms sound like everyone else's. Absolutely horrible drug! I feel like my life is ruined. Now they want to give me gabapentin for my pain and I'm terrified of what permanent side effects it may cause me.

What drugs interact with Cipro (Utiminx)?

Utiminx is an inhibitor of human cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) mediated metabolism. Co-administration of CIPRO XR with other drugs primarily metabolized by CYP1A2 results in increased plasma concentrations of these drugs and could lead to clinically significant adverse events of the co-administered drug.

Utiminx Warnings

Utiminx may increase the risk for swelling and tearing of tendons, such as those that attach muscles to bones in the hands, shoulders, and ankles.

The likelihood of tendon damage is greater if you also take a steroid medication or if you're older than 60. If you experience pain, swelling, or stiffness while taking Utiminx, let your doctor know.

In some people, Utiminx may cause changes in brain activity. This affects people with a history of seizures.

Possible symptoms of these changes include dizziness, hallucinations, tremors, seizures, confusion, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

If you have any of these symptoms while on Utiminx, let your doctor know right away.

Utiminx may cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis if you are allergic to it.

This allergic reaction, which can be life-threatening, may include hives, swelling of the throat, and difficulty breathing.

It's important to know that once you start a course of Utiminx, you should finish the whole course.

Do not stop taking Utiminx, even if you feel better, until all of the medication is gone.

If you don't take an antibiotic long enough, your infection can come back stronger. And stopping Utiminx too soon can lead to bacteria becoming resistant to it.

You may not be able to take Utiminx if you have a condition called myasthenia gravis. Utiminx may increase muscle weakness caused by this condition.

You should also take Utiminx with caution if you have certain conditions. Tell your doctor if you have:

  • Heartburn or reflux
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Asthma
  • Tendon injury
  • Heart condition
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease

Important: there are also a number of rare but more serious side-effects which have been associated with Utiminx. Speak with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of the following:

  • An allergic-type reaction, such as swelling around your face or mouth, a skin rash, or any difficulty breathing.
  • Pain or inflammation in your muscles, tendons or joints (possible tendinopathy).
  • Any feelings of pain, burning, tingling, numbness or weakness.
  • Any problems with your vision or eyes, or changes to taste, smell or hearing.

If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to the medicine, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
