Awful, awful side effects. My doctor failed to mention any of them, so I thought I was dying. Turns out, just side effects. Excruciating joint pain and swelling, fatigue, and an itchy rash all over. I would not recommend.

Falexim Dosage

The dose of Falexim prescribed will depend on the type of infection and whether the person taking it is a child or an adult.

Here are general guidelines for Falexim dosage:

  • The usual adult dose ranges from 1 to 4 grams a day, given in divided doses.
  • Typical adult doses of Falexim are 250 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg every 12 hours.
  • The usual dose for a child is 25 to 50 milligrams (mg) per kilogram of weight, given in divided doses.
  • Keflex capsules come in 250, 333, 500, and 750 mg options.

Doses may be doubled for more severe infections.

Depending on the type of infection, treatment may last from 7 to 14 days.

If very large doses of Falexim are needed, another type of cephalosporin that can be given by injection or an intravenous infusion may be used.

Here are some general rules for taking Falexim:

  • Take it with food or milk to prevent an upset stomach.
  • Always take it as directed and for as long as directed. Skipping doses or not finishing your Falexim prescription can lead to a more dangerous and resistant infection.
  • Do not chew, split, or crush Falexim capsules. Take them whole with a full glass of water, and with food or milk.
  • Store capsules in a safe, dry place and at room temperature.
  • Keep Falexim suspension in the refrigerator. Don't freeze it. Unused suspension should be thrown away after 14 days.
  • If you are using Falexim suspension, make sure to shake the liquid well before each dose.
  • Falexim use may interfere with some laboratory tests. These include blood tests and some urine testing done for diabetes. Always let your caregiver know you are taking Falexim before you are tested.

Symptoms of oral overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. In the event of an overdose, institute general supportive measures.

Forced diuresis, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, or charcoal hemoperfusion have not been established as beneficial for an overdose of Falexim.

How should this medicine be used?

Falexim comes as a capsule, tablet, and suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food every 6 or 12 hours for 7 to 14 days, depending on the condition being treated. Take Falexim at around the same times every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Falexim exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly.

You should begin to feel better during the first few days of treatment with Falexim. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, call your doctor.

Continue to take Falexim until you finish the prescription even if you feel better. If you stop taking Falexim too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to Falexim or to other cephalosporin antibiotics, such as:

cefaclor (Ceclor, Raniclor);

cefazolin (Ancef, Kefzol);

cefuroxime (Ceftin); and others

To make sure Falexim is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

an allergy to any drugs (especially penicillins);

kidney disease; or

a history of intestinal problems, such as colitis; or

a medical condition that requires blood-thinners

The liquid form of Falexim may contain sugar. This may affect you if you have diabetes.

Falexim is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

Falexim can pass into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take Falexim?

Take Falexim exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not use Falexim to treat any condition that has not been checked by your doctor.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Falexim will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Do not share Falexim with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

This medication can cause you to have unusual results with certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Falexim.

Store the tablets and capsules at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Store the liquid medicine in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused liquid after 14 days.

Hypersensitivity Reactions

Allergic reactions in the form of rash, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis have been reported with the use of KEFLEX. Before therapy with KEFLEX is instituted, inquire whether the patient has a history of hypersensitivity reactions to Falexim, cephalosporins, penicillins, or other drugs. Cross-hypersensitivity among beta-lactam antibacterial drugs may occur in up to 10% of patients with a history of penicillin allergy.

If an allergic reaction to KEFLEX occurs, discontinue the drug and institute appropriate treatment.
