What is Excef?

The active ingredient of Excef brand is cefixime. Cefixime is a cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotic. It works by fighting bacteria in your body.

Uses of Excef Capsules and Tablets:

  • It is used to treat bacterial infections.

Important: if you develop an itchy rash, swollen face or mouth, or have difficulty breathing, these can be signs that you are allergic to the antibiotic. Do not take any more Excef and speak with your doctor or go to your local accident and emergency department straightaway.

If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to this medicine, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Otitis Media

SUPRAX is indicated in the treatment of adults and pediatric patients six months of age or older with otitis media caused by susceptible isolates of Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes. (Efficacy for Streptococcus pyogenes in this organ system was studied in fewer than 10 infections.)

For patients with otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, overall response was approximately 10% lower for Excef than for the comparator .

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, confusion or weakness;
  • a seizure (convulsions);
  • low blood cell counts--sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, flu-like symptoms, swollen gums, mouth sores, skin sores, rapid heart rate, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, feeling light-headed;
  • kidney problems--little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
  • severe skin reaction--fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

Common side effects may include:

  • indigestion, stomach pain;
  • nausea, vomiting; or
  • vaginal itching or discharge.

Is Excef safe to take if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

Safety in pregnancy has not been established for Excef. There are no adequate studies in pregnant women; however, studies in animals suggest no important effects on the fetus.

Safety in nursing mothers has not been established. It is not known if Excef is excreted in breast milk.

Excef During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pregnancy

Excef has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Animal studies failed to reveal evidence of fetal harm. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Excef is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Breastfeeding

There are no data on the excretion of Excef into human milk. Other cephalosporins are excreted into human milk in small amounts. While adverse effects are unlikely, the infant should be monitored closely.

What should I avoid while taking Excef?

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
