Abnormal taste sense

Doctors know antibiotics like Clamentin can cause taste disturbances. Sometimes, a person may find foods taste metallic when they are taking Clamentin. One possible reason is the medication can affect how well the body absorbs the mineral zinc. A zinc deficiency can cause a bad or metallic taste in the mouth.

Other people may find they are more sensitive to extremely sweet or salty tastes when they are taking Clamentin. A person may also be dehydrated if they have a fever while they’re taking antibiotics. Dry mouth can affect a person’s taste sensations too.

Most of the time, these side effects go away when you stop taking Clamentin. Drinking more water to stay hydrated can help. If you’re having a hard time eating anything because of weird tastes, talk to your doctor.

Difficulty urinating

Painful urination describes any pain, discomfort, or burning sensation during urination.

Pain during urination is a fairly common problem. It is most often caused by a urinary tract infection.

Clamentin may cause crystals to form in the urine. These crystals are directly tied to the Clamentin and look very different than crystals otherwise commonly found in urine. It can also happen in rare cases where the kidney is negatively impacted.

To prevent this, never take more than your prescribed dose and drink plenty of water. If you’re experiencing slight discomfort when you urinate, drink water and reduce the amount of protein in your diet.

Painful urination can also indicate renal failure or damage. Contact your doctor right away if you are experiencing this.

Fast facts on Clamentin

Here are some key points about Clamentin. More information is in the main article.

  • Clamentin works by preventing bacteria from growing, and killing them.
  • Clamentin can treat infections caused by bacteria but not those caused by viruses.
  • It can be used with other medications to treat some stomach ulcers.
  • Common adverse effects include diarrhea, candidiasis, and tooth discoloration.
  • Patients should always discuss their current state of health and medical history with their doctor before starting a course of Clamentin.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • If you (or your child) have been prescribed the oral liquid medicine, you may find that it causes some staining of the teeth. Brushing the teeth regularly helps to prevent this. Any staining usually disappears soon after the course of antibiotics is finished.
  • Even if you feel your infection has cleared up, keep taking the antibiotic until the course is finished (unless a doctor tells you to stop). This is to prevent the infection from coming back.
  • Antibiotics are prescribed in short courses of treatment. Your doctor will tell you how long your course of treatment will last - this is not usually for longer than 14 days. If you still feel unwell after finishing the course, go back to see your doctor.
  • Some people develop redness and itching in the mouth or vagina (thrush) after taking a course of antibiotics. If this happens to you, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
  • If you are taking the contraceptive 'pill' at the same time as this antibiotic, the effectiveness of the 'pill' can be reduced if you have a bout of being sick (vomiting) or diarrhoea which lasts for more than 24 hours. If this should happen, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice about what additional contraceptive precautions to use over the following few days. There is no need to use additional precautions for any bouts of sickness or diarrhoea which last for less than 24 hours.
  • Clamentin can stop the oral typhoid vaccine from working. If you are due to have any vaccinations, make sure the person treating you knows that you are taking this antibiotic.

Clamentin Warnings

It's important to know that once you start a course of Clamentin, you should finish the whole course.

Do not stop taking Clamentin, even if you feel better; instead, finish your entire prescription.

Not treating your infection completely can make it come back stronger. Stopping Clamentin too soon can also lead to bacteria that are resistant to it.

People refer to antibiotic-resistant bugs as multidrug resistant bacteria or "superbugs." Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat worldwide.

It's also important to understand that Clamentin may cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis if you are allergic to it.

This reaction, which can be life-threatening, includes hives, swelling of your throat, and difficulty breathing.

Clamentin also can interfere with certain types of birth control pills. Women who are using birth control pills should talk to their doctor before taking Clamentin.

Elderly adults may need to take lower doses of Clamentin.

Always tell your doctor if you have allergies to any medications, especially to antibiotics.

Let your doctor know about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.

Using Clamentin can be risky if you have certain conditions, so let your doctor know if you have:
