Product Info

The sections below will provide you with more specific information and guidelines related to Cefotil and its correct use. Please read them carefully.

Cefotil was approved by the US FDA in December 1987. A prescription is required for this medicine.

Please visit the official site of the FDA for further information.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Cefotil is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, chemically similar to penicillin. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Cefotil is effective against susceptible bacterias causing infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It is also used in treating urinary tract infections, skin infections, and gonorrhea.

Additionally, it is useful in treating acute bacterial bronchitis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Note: Cefotil will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Other uses for this medicine

This medication has not been approved for any alternative uses other than those mentioned in the product information section.

Dosage and using this medicine

Cefotil comes as a tablet and a suspension (liquid) to be taken orally. It is usually taken every 12 hours (twice a day) for 7-10 days.

Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. This medicine can be taken on an empty stomach or with food or milk if it causes stomach upset.

To ensure that you get the correct dose, measure the liquid form of Cefotil with a dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Shake the suspension well before measuring a dose.

Take this medicine at evenly spaced intervals to keep a constant level of drug in the body. It is important to take Cefotil regularly to get the most benefit.

Take all of the Cefotil that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.

What special precautions should I follow?

What is the most important information I should know about Cefotil?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to Cefotil or to similar antibiotics, such as cefdinir (Omnicef), cefprozil (Cefzil), cephalexin (Keflex), and others.

Can Cefotil cause problems?

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with Cefotil. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.
