Cipro is rough on a body. I’ve taken different types of antibiotics for different medical reasons, but Cipro is by far the worst reaction I have ever had to a drug. It has drained me of energy, made me very light headed, left me tasting metallic, loss of appetite, sleepy, headaches and just plain feeling lousy. I stopped taking it after 4 days into a 7 day prescription. Awful stuff. Read the side affects and you may not take it at all.
What Is Antox (Cipro)?
Antox is the generic form of the brand-name antibiotic Cipro.
Doctors prescribe Antox to treat or prevent infections caused by various bacteria that are sensitive to Antox.
The drug works by preventing bacteria from reproducing. Antox belongs to a family of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Antox in 1987 for Bayer Healthcare under the brand name Cipro.
In 2004, the FDA approved generic Antox for several drug manufacturers.
Today, companies also sell Antox under the brand names Cipro XR Extended-Release Tablets and Proquin XR Extended-Release Tablets.
Doctors prescribe Antox to treat infections caused by many different species of bacteria, including:
Common infections treated with Antox include:
Antox won't work against infections caused by viruses (such as colds and the flu), so your doctor will prescribe Antox only if it's very likely that you have a bacterial infection.
That's because using antibiotics like Antox against viruses or other illnesses they can't treat increases the chance that in time they will no longer work against bacterial infections either.
Known as drug resistance, this growing worldwide threat develops because bacteria can adapt, making antibiotics less effective or not effective at all.
These multi-drug-resistant bacteria, or "superbugs," can spread through direct contact, or indirectly in food or water.
In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a surge in gonorrhea rates in 17 American cities between 1991 and 2006 might have been due to Antox resistance.
The CDC noted that roughly 820,000 gonorrhea cases develop in the United States each year and that antibiotic-resistant bacteria could affect treatment and control efforts for this sexually transmitted infection.
Rated Antox (Cipro) for Cystitis Report
I was perscribed this for a UTI. An hour after taking it I developed severe and burning pain in my calves that eventually spread to my body. I couldn't stand for 2 days and could barely move for about a week. I'm still weak and exhausted and in pain and in its been a month now. All from ONE pill. This drug is horrible and I'm angry and upset that it was perscribed for something that could have been treated with a drug with far fewer and far less dangerous side effects.

Please beware and stay away, I got bad tinnitus after only 5 tablets (500 mg), it has persisted for 4 months now, despite all kinds of treatments. Slowly losing hope.
Why is this medication prescribed?
Antox is used to treat or prevent certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia; gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease); typhoid fever (a serious infection that is common in developing countries); infectious diarrhea (infections that cause severe diarrhea); and infections of the skin, bone, joint, abdomen (stomach area), and prostate (male reproductive gland), Antox is also used to treat or prevent plague (a serious infection that may be spread on purpose as part of a bioterror attack) and inhalation anthrax (a serious infection that may be spread by anthrax germs in the air on purpose as part of a bioterror attack). Antox may also be used to treat bronchitis, sinus infections, or urinary tract infections but should not be used for bronchitis and sinus infections, or certain types of urinary tract infections if there are other treatment options. Antox extended-release (long-acting) tablets are used to treat kidney and urinary tract infections; however, some types of urinary tract infections should only be treated with Antox extended release tablets if no other treatment options are available. Antox is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It works by killing bacteria that cause infections.
Antibiotics such as Antox will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Do not take this! Not even one pill! I got this prescribed with no warning of possible side effects! Joints and muscles aching after pill 2. Knew something was up so I research it and threw that bottle in the trash. Take something else if you can!

I was given this drug for a simple UTI infection and a week after I was done with it my life started falling apart! I developed nerve pain in my feet hands and groin which made it difficult to walk. Then my knees became inflamed. The doctors keep doing tests to find out the cause but find nothing and my symptoms sound like everyone else's. Absolutely horrible drug! I feel like my life is ruined. Now they want to give me gabapentin for my pain and I'm terrified of what permanent side effects it may cause me.
