Amoxen and Pregnancy

If you're a woman, let your doctor know if you are or may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or using birth control pills.

Though Amoxen is widely believed to be safe, ask your doctor if the risks of taking antibiotics while pregnant outweigh the benefits.

Also, let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding because Amoxen can pass through breast milk and increase the risk for a later allergic reaction in babies.

Amoxil (Amoxen) is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are B-lactamase negative (B-lactamase positive bacteria are usually resistant to Amoxil); these infections usually occur in the skin, lungs, urinary tract and eye, ears, nose, and throat. Amoxil is available as a generic drug termed Amoxen. Amoxil may be combined with other drugs (for example, clavulanic acid ), to make the antibiotic more effective. Common side effects of Amoxil include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • vaginal itching or discharge
  • headache
  • rash, and
  • swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue.

Other serious side effects of Amoxil include:

  • colitis caused by overgrowth of Clostridium spp in the intestines
  • seizures
  • hives
  • jaundice, and
  • rashes

Amoxil is available in many preparations (capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, powder for oral suspension and pediatric oral suspension). Serious reactions of Amoxil include anaphylactic reactions that can be life-threatening; patients allergic to penicillins should not be given Amoxil. Amoxil may interact with probenecid, blood thinners, other antibiotics, or sulfa drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Treatment in pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should be done with caution.

Dark urine

Normal urine is often a pale or straw yellow color. When urine color strays from this color, it is considered abnormal. Abnormally colored urine may be cloudy, dark, or blood-tinged.

Any changes in urine color, or the presence of an abnormal urine color that cannot be linked to the consumption of a food or drug, should be reported to your doctor. This is particularly important if it happens for longer than a day or two, or you have repeated episodes.

Dark urine can be caused by Amoxen due to changes in blood, liver, and/or kidney function. Renal toxicity is rare (occurring in approximately .03 percent of patients), but when it does occur, it can be serious.

Those at risk for kidney complications in particular should not use Amoxen to prevent this side effect and potential kidney damage. Your doctor can prescribe another type of antibiotic.

If you are prescribed Amoxen, make sure to only take the prescribed dose within the amount of time that is suggested by your doctor. It’s also important to drink the recommended requirement of water.

Dark urine is a severe side effect of Amoxen. Talk to your doctor if you experience changes in your urine.
