What are the potential side effects of Amotid?

Contact your veterinarian immediately if the pet experiences severe or bloody diarrhea during treatment. Stop giving Amotid and seek emergency veterinary medical care in the event of an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; hives; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; rash; or fainting), seizures, unusual bleeding, or bruising. Other less serious side effects such as mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain, or yeast or fungal infection may be more likely to occur. Continue to give Amotid and notify your veterinarian if these symptoms occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

Oral Anticoagulants

Abnormal prolongation of prothrombin time (increased international normalized ratio ) has been reported in patients receiving Amotid and oral anticoagulants. Appropriate monitoring should be undertaken when anticoagulants are prescribed concurrently. Adjustments in the dose of oral anticoagulants may be necessary to maintain the desired level of anticoagulation.

  • Finishing therapy: It’s important to finish the entire course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking this drug or skip doses if you start to feel better. This could cause your infection to last longer. You could also develop a resistance to the medication. This means that if you get a bacterial infection in the future, you may not be able to treat it with Amotid.
  • Diarrhea: Amotid may cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhea, with or without stomach cramps and fever.
  • Serious allergic reaction: This drug can cause a serious allergic reaction. This reaction can be fatal (cause death). If you’re allergic to other antibiotics, such as penicillins or cephalosporins, your risk for an allergic reaction may be higher. Call your doctor right away if you have trouble breathing or swelling of your throat or tongue while you’re taking this drug.

Amotid is a prescription antibiotic. It’s used to treat infections caused by a certain type of bacteria. It may be used as part of a combination therapy. This means you may need to take it with other medications.

The oral tablet comes as an immediate-release (IR) tablet, extended-release (ER) tablet, and chewable tablet. The chewable tablet and IR tablet are only available as generic drugs. The ER tablet is only available as the brand-name drug Moxatag.

Generic drugs usually cost less. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as their brand-name versions.

Amotid also comes as a capsule and a suspension. All forms are taken by mouth.

Amotid side-effects

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with Amotid. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

What are the side effects of Amotid?

Side effects due to Amotid include

People who are allergic to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics, which are related to the penicillins, for example, cefaclor (Ceclor), cephalexin (Keflex), and cefprozil (Cefzil), may or may not be allergic to penicillins.

Serious but rare reactions include:

Amotid can alter the normal bacteria in the colon and encourage overgrowth of some bacteria such as Clostridium difficile which causes inflammation of the colon (pseudomembranous colitis). Patients who develop signs of pseudomembranous colitis after starting Amotid (diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and possibly shock) should contact their physician immediately.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects are rare and happen in less than 1 in 1,000 people.

Call a doctor straight away if you get:

  • diarrhoea (possibly with stomach cramps) that contains blood or mucus. If you have severe diarrhoea for more than 4 days you should also speak to a doctor
  • pale poo with dark pee, yellowing of the skin or the whites of your eyes (warning signs of liver or gallbladder problems)
  • bruising or skin discolouration
  • joint or muscle pain that comes on after 2 days of taking the medicine
  • a skin rash with circular red patches

Some of these serious side effects can happen up to 2 months after finishing the Amotid.

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment Of Fertility

Long-term studies in animals have not been performed to evaluate carcinogenic potential. Studies to detect mutagenic potential of Amotid alone have not been conducted; however, the following information is available from tests on a 4:1 mixture of Amotid and potassium clavulanate (AUGMENTIN). AUGMENTIN was non-mutagenic in the Ames bacterial mutation assay, and the yeast gene conversion assay. AUGMENTIN was weakly positive in the mouse lymphoma assay, but the trend toward increased mutation frequencies in this assay occurred at doses that were also associated with decreased cell survival. AUGMENTIN was negative in the mouse micronucleus test and in the dominant lethal assay in mice. Potassium clavulanate alone was tested in the Ames bacterial mutation assay and in the mouse micronucleus test, and was negative in each of these assays. In a multi-generation reproduction study in rats, no impairment of fertility or other adverse reproductive effects were seen at doses up to 500 mg/kg (approximately 2 times the 3 g human dose based on body surface area).

How to take Amotid

  • Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from ins >

Dosing In Neonates And Infants Aged ≤ 12 Weeks ( ≤ 3 Months)

Treatment should be continued for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours beyond the time that the patient becomes asymptomatic or evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained. It is recommended that there be at least 10 days' treatment for any infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes to prevent the occurrence of acute rheumatic fever. Due to incompletely developed renal function affecting elimination of Amotid in this age group, the recommended upper dose of AMOXIL is 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours. There are currently no dosing recommendations for pediatric patients with impaired renal function.

Amotid is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

Amotid is also used with other medications to treat stomach/intestinal ulcers caused by the bacteria H. pylori and to prevent the ulcers from returning.
