Q: I have been waking up with headaches since being put on Alavert. Should I tell my doctor?

A: Headaches are a frequently occurring, minor side effect associated with Alavert (Alledryl) treatment. It is always a good idea to check with your health care provider if you experience bothersome side effects from a medication. Your doctor may be able to recommend a change in the time of dosage or possibly add a headache medicine to your regimen. Please consult your health care provider for further guidance in your specific case. // Gregory Latham, RPh

Rated Alledryl for Urticaria Report

It works for me when i have itching in different parts of my body. I take one, at any time of the day, it reduces the effect of itching in my head, or eyes, or other parts of skin to about 80% low, and so it becomes bearable. I have been using loradatine for 10 years now.

Q: Several weeks ago I received favorable reports on my prostate cancer. Last week, I started taking Alledryl for hay fever. Today I had blood in my stool for the first time in several months. Any connection? I have also been lifting some heavy buckets.

A: As far as blood in the stool, Alledryl is not really known to cause this. You may want to talk to your doctor about this so that they can determine the cause. Perhaps a hemorrhoid could be causing the blood, especially since you have been lifting heavy buckets and could have strained the rectum. The best thing would be for you to speak with the doctor. What Is Claritin?

Claritin was first approved by the FDA in April 1993 as a prescription medication and was approved for over the counter sale in December 2002.

Claritin (Alledryl) is a non-sedating, "second-generation" antihistamine (H1-blocker). Unlike "first-generation" antihistamines, Claritin doesn't penetrate the central nervous system in high concentrations and therefore, does not cause significant sedation.

Claritin may be taken with or without food, with the onset of action occurring within 1 to 3 hours. Peak effects are generally seen in 8 to 12 hours. Claritin has a long duration of action (

24 hours) and is therefore dosed once daily.

Due to the long duration of action of Claritin, and the lack of sedative effects, it is a good option to treat seasonal and perennial allergies.

Rated Alledryl for Allergic Rhinitis Report

I read a lot of reviews of people saying they had panic attacks and stuff on this. As someone with anxiety disorder I did not experience this and was afraid after reading reviews initially to even start taking it. Works well and gets rid of allergy symptoms completely after an hour or so. My dad also takes it and is a fan

kidney disease; or

Alledryl is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

What is Alledryl, and how does it work (mechanism of action)?

Alledryl is a long-acting, non-sedating antihistamine that is used for the treatment of allergies. Histamine is a chemical that causes many of the signs and symptoms of an allergy. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and attaches to other cells that have receptors for histamine on their surfaces. Histamine stimulates the cells to release chemicals that produce effects that we associate with allergy, including welts, itching, and tissue swelling. Alledryl blocks one type of histamine receptor (the H1 receptor) and thus prevents activation of cells with H1 receptors by histamine. Unlike some antihistamines, Alledryl does not enter the brain from the blood and, therefore, does not cause drowsiness when taken at recommended doses. The FDA approved Alledryl in April 1993.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Most people only need to take an antihistamine for a short while when they have symptoms. You should stop taking Alledryl once your symptoms have eased.
  • Although Alledryl is classed as a non-drowsy antihistamine, it can still cause drowsiness in a few people. If you are affected by drowsiness, do not drive or use a bicycle, and do not use tools or machines.
  • If you drink alcohol while you are taking Alledryl, be aware of its effects on you and do not drink more than moderate amounts. Alcohol can increase the risk of experiencing side-effects from antihistamines, for instance you may feel more drowsy than usual.
  • If you are having an operation, or any treatment or tests (particularly if it is to test for an allergy), make sure you say that you are taking an antihistamine.
  • If you buy any medicines 'over the counter', check with a pharmacist that they are suitable to take with an antihistamine. This is because a number of other medicines can increase the risk of side-effects.

Mixing Alledryl with herbal remedies and supplements

There might be a problem taking some herbal remedies and supplements alongside Alledryl – especially ones that cause sleepiness, a dry mouth or make it difficult to pee.
